I have never used OS X but I just find it more pleasing to use a dock, I just think it looks better and saves using the task bar drop down menus or having to right click the desktop all of the time. It is no different, except tidier, than having desktop shortcuts. With docky set to ¨intellihide¨, it does not really take up any space.

In the top task bar I have windows programs that have been paid for and have been installed via wine, so far, the only way I have found to keep links to them readily available is within the task bar. If I try to add them to a dock, they do not work (I do not want a desktop icon to them).

We are all different thank goodness, luckily we can change the look of linux to suit our individual aesthetic requirements.

oh, that makes sense. With auto-hiding which i have never learned to adapt to no matter how hard I try It would make it easier, thanks for explanation

I thought i'd muck around a bit and make my desktop look a bit like Windows 10, i may use this theme to trick others (family and friends)on a spare pc into thinking i'm using Windows, then i'l just explain that it's Linux in disguise.
That will confuse them..

nice job there, I think to add to it you should go on menu preferences and make the start menu icon-only without the text like windows 10 really is

Here's my job at it. I tried the windows icon theme but it screws other of my icons in the taskbar so I don't like it. I just manually set the icon launchers

My current Desktop August 2016, ChaletOS 14.01 still has not missed a beat in over a year.
