Software Updater: Data files for some packages could not be downloaded 'flashplugin-installer' Empty Software Updater: Data files for some packages could not be downloaded 'flashplugin-installer'

Post by hughparker1 Sat Jan 28, 2017 6:18 am

After I run an update via Software Updater, I get message....

Code:
Data files for some packages could not be downloaded

The following packages requested additional data downloads after package installation, but the data could not be downloaded or could not be processed.

flashplugin-installer

when I check flash version in Firefox using... http://www.adobe.com/uk/software/flash/about/
I get message "This plugin is vulnerable and should be updated"

when I try to update through the terminal the update thinks I already have the newest version ....
Code:
hugh@SONY-CHALETOS:~$ sudo apt install flashplugin-installer
[sudo] password for hugh:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
flashplugin-installer is already the newest version (11.2.202.621ubuntu0.16.04.1).
I'm not sure how to fix this, any idea why this is happening?

I'm not sure if I need conky-all as I see it's been held back but looks like it is not related to my issue?

alright i dont think the problem is on your end. the upgrade source for that particular piece of software must be screwed up. maybe try it in a few days. in the mean time your current flash version should be alright.

Software Updater: Data files for some packages could not be downloaded 'flashplugin-installer' Empty Re: Software Updater: Data files for some packages could not be downloaded 'flashplugin-installer'

I'm guessing this is the same problem I had. I performed the update via terminal (I always do, so I can catch errors like this) and this was the error:

Code:
flashplugin-installer: processing...
flashplugin-installer: downloading http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_20160512.1.orig.tar.gz
Err:1 http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_20160512.1.orig.tar.gz
  404  Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.150 80]
N: Ignoring file '50unattended-upgrades.ucf-dist' in directory '/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
W: Can't drop privileges for downloading as file '/var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial/adobe-flashplugin_20160512.1.orig.tar.gz' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)
E: Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_20160512.1.orig.tar.gz 404  Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.150 80]

No idea how to fix it myself. I will probably just uninstall it though, I don't need flash support.

404 not found, hmmmmmmm. that means either the server is having a cardiac arrest or your internet connection is. you arent connected to any proxy are you? if not, then wait a day for them to get the server back up.

Nope, nothing special about my internet connection - just a regular home DSL router (NAT). All other updates worked fine.

Going to http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_20160512.1.orig.tar.gz it shows a 404 in my broser - perhaps you can confirm on your end? Maybe the flashplugin-installer itself is pulling some obsolete information (I'm not sure how it works) from somewhere?

I can also confirm that on my end. so that gives 2 possibilities:

1. server down
2. the file moved to a different url

in case #2 is correct, try running in a terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
