Day 2 - what is UEFI? Empty Day 2 - what is UEFI?

Post by Nanda Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:45 pm

Hi there! I was on Chalet 14 (procured from my school's dropbox drive), but before I really had a chance to explore the OS, I heard about 16, and was informed there is no direct upgrade/update from 14 to 16. Having downloaded both versions (x86/x64) to replace the two-in-one we had, I reinstalled ChaletOS 16.. and.. grub failed. Because I wanted the install to operate taking full advantage of my hybrid hard drive. It has a SSD as part of the drive, for faster booting.

But it won't! Any time I try to install with UEFI enabled, it breaks the install. Legacy? No problem - but I have to install /that/ with an external DVD. I seem unable to install from USB with Rufus.

Ah well. I have it all installed now, using Legacy, so my boot is a feeeeeew seconds slower, that's cool.. but my laptop sure is starting to irk me, haha.

To add - the reason I even wanted Linux installed on my system? Well, it's not a /strong/ laptop. Definitely not a gaming laptop, due to shared video RAM running "Intel HD Graphics." Whatever that means.

What is windows for? Primarily, gaming, isn't it? Well if I can't game, why use the OS, particularly with all it's added vulnerabilities. It just didn't make sense, and I'm running Windows on my desktop, so.. here I am, on my laptop!

UEFI is problematic on many other distros too, for example my Gigabyte motherboard had non-compliant implementation and it caused lots of grief until February when grub started supporting it. There's no downside to booting from MBR, you just have to remember to write boot sector.

I wish uefi did not exist or was not so HORRIBLE! it denies you direct access to your machines.
